The remains of the 26 year old were flown in to uncontrollable wailing.
Cameroon Legend Rigobert Song and other sports administrators were in attendance to pay their last respect to Ekeng.
Friday’s event comes some thirteen years after a similar tragedy struck another Cameroonian player, Marc-Vivien Foe.
“It’s really sad. I remember a shy, quiet but very effective player on the ground. He was a genius. I’m feeling bad right now,” Germain Noal Essengue, Sports Journalist said.
Forensic investigations have started to determine the cause of Ekeng’s death.
The Romanian Football Federation (FRF) has also announced the postponement of all matches this weekend including Ekeng’s team Dinamo Bucharest’s Romania Cup final against CFR Cluj.
It will now be honoured on May 17.
